Scope and Content Interior, looking north, of St Andrew's Church (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. The oval plan is complemented by the concentric ovals of the ceiling, and the curving, mainly late 19th century, pews. The six stained glass windows showing the Evangelists, David and Isaiah, are by the Edinburgh glass-stainer, James Ballantine in 1890. In 1843 this was the scene of 'the Disruption'. At the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland here, 470 ministers, angry at the appointment of ministers by patronage, walked out to form their own Free Church of Scotland.
