Scope and Content Aerial view of Cardoness Castle and Fleet Canal, Dumfries and Galloway Cardoness Castle lies 1km south-west of Gatehouse of Fleet. To the south-east (bottom) of the site is the Water of Fleet, which Alexander Murray of Broughton, MP, had canalised in 1824 to improve drainage on the agricultural land of the Fleet estuary. This aerial view shows the late 15th-century tower-house of Cardoness Castle and associated outbuildings. The castle has passed through the hands of a number of families - McCullochs, Gordons, Maxwells, Stewarts, Murray-Baillies and back to the Maxwells. Though roofless, the castle is practically complete but has been uninhabited since the late 17th century. In 1927 Lady Maxwell placed the castle in State care (now Historic Scotland) and the outbuildings were rebuilt to their present level in the 1930s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
