Scope and Content General oblique aerial view of Silverknowes, Edinburgh The Silverknowes development was built c.1937, with council housing on the west side (top left) and private developments by Mactaggart and Mickel on the east (top right). The two semi-circles are bisected by Silverknowes Road. This shows the pattern made by the Silverknowes development from the air. At the top of the picture is the start of Silverknowes golf course, beyond which lies the Firth of Forth. At the bottom of the picture can be seen the Davidson's Mains area. The planning of Silverknowes reflects the ideals of the 'garden city'. This type of development includes cottages or small flats with substantial gardens, set out along tree-lined roads.
