Scope and Content The Mercat Cross, High Street, Edinburgh The Mercat Cross, mentioned in a charter of 1365, stood on the south side of High Street, east of St Giles. It was rebuilt in 1617, demolished in 1756, and parts were rebuilt into the present Cross of 1885 which stands just south of its original position. The present Cross, donated in 1885 by Mr Gladstone when MP for Midlothian, incorporates the 15th-century capital from the cross of 1617. The octagonal base bears the coats of arms of the burghs of Edinburgh. The unicorn, by John Rhind, was added in 1869. The Mercat Cross in the High Street was the focal point for trade, but also served as a place of execution, a centre for public entertainment and rejoicing, and from where Royal Proclamations were made.
