Scope and Content Detail of Capital from the Mercat Cross, High Street, Edinburgh The Mercat Cross, mentioned in a charter of 1365, stood on the south side of High Street, east of St Giles. It was rebuilt in 1617, demolished in 1756, and parts were rebuilt into the present Cross of 1885 which stands just south of its original position. The 15th-century capital, carved with dragons and foliage, was used with the shaft in the rebuilding of the Cross by John Tailefer and John Mylne in 1617. It was incorporated in the new Cross of 1885 donated by Mr Gladstone, then MP for Midlothian. The Mercat or Market Cross was the focal point for trade, but also served as a place of execution and a centre for public entertainment and rejoicing, and from where Royal Proclamations were made.
