Scope and Content 17th-century view of Parliament House, Parliament Square, Edinburgh Parliament House was built in 1639 by James Murray, Master of Works for King Charles I, for the Scots Parliament, the Court of Session and the Privy Council. Parliament moved here from the Castle in 1639 and remained until the Treaty of Union in 1707. Parliament House was built in the upper part of the kirkyard of St Giles which sloped steeply down towards the Cowgate. The L-shaped building comprised a hall for Parliament, a Laigh (low) Hall beneath, and an east wing. The Scots Parliament appears in the records in the later 13th century. It met as a single body in one chamber: no distinction was made among the 'Three Estates', the clergy, nobility and burgesses which comprised the Parliament. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
