Scope and Content Plan of broch at Keiss, Caithness This is one of some 30 archaeological sites excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. The broch at Keiss was within sight of Barry's home at Keiss Castle and was one of the first sites he uncovered. Barry recognised the need to make a record of his work and this is one of several printed plans which survive. Details of structures found are labelled but in this example Barry's latest discoveries have been added in pencil. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle in 1890. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
