Scope and Content Marriage lintel over the doorway of Lady Stair's House, Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Lady Stair's House, built in 1622, was formerly called Lady Gray's House after Gidia Smith, widow of the original owner, Sir William Gray. It was bought by their granddaughter, the Countess of Stair, a noted beauty and leader of fashion, in 1719. The marriage lintel, dated 1622, one of several in the Old Town, is of William Gray and Gidia Smith. A lion rampant represents the Grays of Pittendrum and the saltire, the Smiths of Grothill. The inscription is 'Feare the Lord and Depart from Evill'. Lady Stair's House was given to the City of Edinburgh by Lord Rosebery, a descendant of the Grays of Pittendrum, in 1907. It now houses a museum to three famous Scottish writers: Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and the poet, Robert Burns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
