Scope and Content Ink and watercolour drawing showing part of a painted ceiling panel from the Palace of Mary of Guise, Castlehill, Edinburgh The 16th-century Palace of Guise, the Edinburgh home of Mary of Guise, wife of King James V and mother of Mary Queen of Scots, stood on the north side of Castlehill. It was demolished in 1861 to make way for the Free Church General Assembly Hall. Before demolition, portions of a beautifully painted ceiling from the palace were rescued and preserved. This copy of one heraldic ceiling panel, made in 1887, shows an owl and unicorns with human features, and other symbolic creatures. Mary Queen of Scots took up residence in the Palace of Guise for a short time in 1544 when Holyrood Palace was sacked by the English under the Earl of Hertford. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
