Scope and Content Burgh bell and mounting inside Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. An original 1646 burgh bell survives in the steeple, built in 1642-4 after the council decided a proper steeple was an important 'ornament' for a burgh. A second bell is displayed in the building, and the burgh clock is now in Stewartry Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
