Scope and Content Forestair and steeple-entrance of Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. A set of jougs hangs at the top of the forestair. A cistern replaced the entrance below it in 1763. The plaque reads: THIS FOUNT - NOT RICHES - LIFE SUPPLIES; POSTERITY MUST SURELY BLESS SAID CUTHBERT'S SONS WHO PUCHAS'D THIS. WATER INTRODUCED 1763. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
