Scope and Content Main production block from north-west, Strathmill Distillery, Keith, Moray Strathmill Distillery was originally a meal mill constructed in 1823. During the distillery building boom of the 1890s it was converted and developed to become Glenisla-Glenlivet Distillery in 1891. In 1895 it was acquired by gin distillers A Gilbey of London, who changed the name to Strathmill. A second pair of stills was added in 1968. This shows, on the left, the still house with its row of skylights in the roof where the wash from fermentation is distilled in copper pot stills. In the centre are the malt kilns with their distinctive pagoda vents. Barley would be soaked and allowed to germinate in the maltings before being dried over peated fires in the kiln. The stills at Strathmill are fitted with filters on their 'lyne arms' (the pipe which runs from the top of the still to the condenser) which create a lighter spirit. The whisky is used as an important component in J&B and Dunhill blended whiskies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
