Scope and Content Piazza in Montrose Town-house, Angus Montrose Town-house was built after a local committee offered to pay for a new assembly room. It replaced a medieval tolbooth which continued to be used as a prison until it was demolished in 1837. Accessible from the piazza, the ground-floor rooms originally included a guard-house, a coffee-room, and shops. An opening known as the 'deid arch' leads from the piazza to the adjacent churchyard.
