Scope and Content Peebles Town-house, Scottish Borders Peebles Town-house was built to replace a separate tolbooth and steeple after the burgh council decided to copy other royal burghs which had built 'new Houses, commonly called Town Houses'. Work began three years after the decision. The pediment is dated 1753 but the building was not finished until 1756. The burgh bells remained in the old steeple until its demolition in 1776. They were moved to a new parish church, begun 1778, whose steeple was paid for by the town council. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
