Scope and Content Council-chamber inside Newburgh Town-house, Fife Newburgh Town-house replaced an earlier 16th century tolbooth after the town council petitioned the Secretary of State for War, Henry Dundas, for government assistance in building a new tolbooth. Work began in 1808. The first floor retains some original features, especially in the council-chamber where a small gallery and a coombed ceiling survive. In the same room, an early 19th-century box-pew probably occupies the position of the original fireplace. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
