Scope and Content Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Nairn, Highland Nairn was founded as a royal burgh in about 1200. By 1800, it was a thriving community with its own fishing town. It developed into a resort after it was connected to the rail network in 1855. The Royal Marine Hotel was built in 1860 by James Matthews and extended in 1869. It was extended for a third time in 1890 when the golf-course it overlooked became a tourist attraction. A third major extension was carried out in 1934. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
