Scope and Content High-level view of Ullapool, Highland Ullapool was refounded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society who allocated plots and erected a pier, warehouses and an inn. Six years later, local herring stocks vanished and the town's economy collapsed. Its economy revived in the mid 19th century. In 1794, when the herring boom ended, the town contained 70 houses, as well as churches and an inn to serve the population. Ullapool's prosperity revived about 50 years later when Sir James Matheson purchased the town. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
