Scope and Content Ullapool, Highland Ullapool is located on the north shore of Loch Broom. The town was designed and built by Thomas Telford (1757-1834) who was commissioned by the British Fisheries Society. The deed which recorded title of the land at Ullapool to the Society was conveyed by John Lord MacLeod, heir to 3rd Earl of Cromartie, on 25th February 1788. This view shows the town of Ullapool from the east together with the harbour and ferry terminal (centre left). Loch Broom can be seen in the background. The new town at Ullapool was intended to exploit the boom in the Scottish herring fishing industry. However, despite a late 19th-century decline in herring fishing, this has remained central to the town's economy. Ullapool is also the main terminus for the ferry to Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles.
