Scope and Content Steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland, from west Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is the steading from the west, showing the extensive carriage house (right) with the stable with loft above in the foreground (left). Inside this were eight stalls along the west wall, later removed when the stable was converted to a byre and fitted with five double stalls and a calf pen. Cattle were last housed at Tongue Mains in the 1970s after which it was used to house sheep. The large carriage house doors and granary shutters were replaced in the early 1990s.
