Scope and Content A broad calm bay overlooked by a ruined fortress on the pinnacle of a steep hill. A cluster of buildings stands on a walled terrace at the foot of the hill and a barge is moored beside the pier. Workmen stand on the deck of the steam driven barge or boat. A large stone built buoy or beacon stands on a rock shelf to left of the pier. Works chimneys are visible above the town buildings in the background. Dumbarton Rock has been occupied since the 5th century AD. It was a royal stronghold and here Mary Queen of Scots stayed before she went to France in 1543. William Wallace was held here before he was sent to London. The castle is now a museum.
