Scope and Content A substantial symmetrical building in classical style with Corinthian columns on a rustic stone base and balustrades on the roof edge. The corner towers also have urns on the top. There is a statue in foreground and a further classical building beyond. An ornate lamp post stands to the left of the statue and the back wheels of a carriage are visible beneath the statue plinth. A lion and unicorn support a crest above the classical style portico at left. City tenements are visible in the far background. The Post Office is at the corner of Princes Street and the North Bridge. The foundation stone was laid in 1861 by Prince Albert; it opened in 1866 and was designed by Mr Matheson. It was extended in 1891.
