Scope and Content A close view of the statue of a regal figure in heroic pose, sword in hand, set on a marble plinth within a railed enclosure. A smaller statue is seen in a niche on the clock tower behind. A gas mantle street lamp is seen to the left of the statue. Lochmaben Castle was the ancestral home of King Robert I, also known as Robert the Bruce (1274-1329). The statue is by John Hutchinson RSA and stands on the site of the old market cross. It was unveiled on 13 September 1879. In the background is the new Town Hall, built in Scottish baronial style to designs by David Bryce RSA in 1878 to replace an earlier town hall of 1723.
