Scope and Content A long chamber with bare stone walls and wooden floor, large open fireplaces, plain wooden tables and benches, and leather sofas; there are oil lamps suspended from the roof. The castle was a border stronghold of the Kerrs from the 15th century, fell to the English forces in 1523, was restored to the family in 1549, destroyed by the Earl of Sussex in retaliation for an attempt to free Mary, Queen of Scots, and rebuilt in 1598. The interior of the castle was restored in the late 19th century. Walter Scott, William Wordsworth and his sister, Dorothy, visited Ferniehirst in September 1803.
