Scope and Content An engraved boulder on a moorland field, with a cluster of traditional stone and thatch cottages in the background, and hills beyond. Erroneously believed to have been used by the Duke of Cumberland to survey the the action at the Battle of Culloden. The Battle of Culloden, 16 April, 1746, was a decisive battle fought between Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the Duke of Cumberland which put an end to the hopes of Jacobite supporters. Culloden was the last major battle to be fought in mainland Britain. William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), the youngest son of George II, was known as Butcher Cumberland after his ruthless treatment of the defeated Highland regiment during and after Culloden, and in pursuit of Jacobite supporters.
