Scope and Content Main block, Falkland House, Fife Falkland House was built as Nuthill House in 1839-44 by William Burn for Onesiphorus Tyndall-Bruce whose wife inherited the Falkland estate. The interior was remodelled by R W Schultz for the Marquis of Bute who had purchased the property in 1887. The house was built in Jacobean style with long rectangular windows and crow-stepped gables. A semicircular conservatory had been planned for the south front right) but was never built. Jacobean, based on early 17th century architecture, was on of the 'national' style that became popular in the 19th century because they were supposed to reflect local, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
