Scope and Content Still house from south-east, Knockando Distillery, Moray Knockando Distillery was founded in 1898 by the Knockando-Glenlivet Distillery Company but closed 1900-4. The floor maltings were discontinued in 1968, and the works were renovated in 1969, when the number of stills was increased from two to four. Distillate for blending is matured elsewhere, but Knockando single malt is matured on the premises. This shows the four copper pot stills in the still house. The nearest pair are the spirit stills, used for the second distillation, and the furthest pair are wash stills, used for the first distillation. The tiled bases hide the steam heaters. The stills were made by Grants of Dufftown. During distillation, the wash from fermentation is heated until the alcohol rises as vapour to be condensed in condensers on the outside of the still house. Only the 'heart' of the second distillation is sent to be put into casks: the foreshots (first part) and feints (last part of the run) are re-distilled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
