Scope and Content Main block of duty free warehouses from south, Knockando Distillery, Moray Knockando Distillery was founded in 1898 by the Knockando-Glenlivet Distillery Company but closed 1900-4. The floor maltings were discontinued in 1968, and the works were renovated in 1969, when the number of stills was increased from two to four. Distillate for blending is matured elsewhere, but Knockando single malt is matured on the premises. This shows the duty free warehouses which are used to store casks of whisky until they have matured, taking their golden colour and complex flavours from the oak casks. The walls of the warehouses are of rubble, surmounted by a tiled roof. Bars at the windows protect the valuable contents within. Knockando, means 'little black hill' in Gaelic, and the distillery is situated on a sloping bank next to the River Tay. It uses water from the Cardnach spring in its whisky production, and the majority of the spirit produced here finds its way into J&B blends. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
