Scope and Content Gravestone of Andrew Turnbull, Hobkirk churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Andrew Turnbull, a local tenant farmer, who died in 1692. His wife, Elizabeth Lillie, is also buried here, having died in 1719 aged 76. Above the inscription panel, a trumpeting angel heralds the coming of the Resurrection. Beneath the angel is a winged cherub, representing a soul ascending to heaven, whilst the skull and crossbones opposite signify death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
