Scope and Content Mural monuments commemorating John Douglas, St Mary's Parish Church, Marketgate, Crail, Fife This mural monument commemorates John Douglas, merchant, baillie of Crail and member of the Scottish Parliament, who died in 1621 at the age of 81. Within the rounded pediment, flanked by John's initials, are the Douglas arms, three stars above a heart. The inscription beneath eulogises John's life, the two stanzas forming an anagram, the words of the first being contained within the second stanza. Records show John Douglas was a baillie (a burgh official) from 1588-1602, representing Crail at six conventions of royal burghs. Some time after 1600 John appears to have remarried and left his second wife and daughter a total of £2489 13s 4d. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
