Scope and Content View of South Lodge, Millburn Tower, Ratho, Edinburgh This interesting circular lodge was built c.1805, possibly inspired by plans by architect Benjamin Latrobe, who designed a similar structure for the Liston estate in 1800. It comprises two linked circular buildings with central chimneys. This photograph shows the lodge with its conical slate roofs, deep eaves and central chimneys. The taller chimneys are Victorian additions. It would have provided a picturesque home for the gatekeeper, and a talking point for visitors to the estate. This lodge leads to Millburn Tower, a castellated keep and long range of rooms built between 1806 and 1821 for Robert Liston, British Ambassador to the USA. He would have built this lodge to impress his guests upon their arrival at his home. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
