Scope and Content Drawing of broch at Hill of Works, Caithness This is one of some 30 archaeological sites excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. This is a drawing prepared by Barry to show the broch he had discovered at Hill of Works. Barry recognised the need to make a record of his work and this is one of several original drawings which survive. Along with several letters and c.200 photographs, the collection illustrates Barry's archaeological research. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
