Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Holm of Papa Westray South, Orkney The chambered cairn at the Holm of Papa Westray South is very large. There is a main rectangular chamber 20.5m long. Twelve side cells, some of them double, branch off from the main chamber. Nothing is known about the contents of the tomb. There are decorative carvings on different stones in the cairn. The motifs include pecked dots and arcs, zigzags, circles, double rings and inverted Vs. It is probable that in Neolithic times the Holm of Papa Westray was not an island but a promontory attached to Papa Westray. Nonetheless, it is still a remote place for one of the largest tombs in Orkney to have been built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
