Scope and Content Chambered cairn, Wideford Hill, Orkney This chambered cairn at Wideford Hill overlooks the Bay of Firth. The floor of the chamber is dug back into the hillside. The original entrance is downslope, though not now used. The site was excavated in the 19th century. This is an entrance to one of the three side cells off the chamber. The floors of the passage, chamber and side cell are all at the same level. Some very large stones have been used in the cairn, for example, the lintel above the cell entrance. Excavations in the 19th century found the cells to be empty, though the main chamber had been deliberately filled in with rubble. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
