Scope and Content Detail of cornice in the drawing room, No 30 Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by the architect, James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, had the grandest late Georgian townhouses in Edinburgh. This elaborate enriched cornice, the decorative moulding in the angle between the wall and ceiling, was probably originally richly gilded, demonstrating the status of the front drawing room. Although most decorative plasterwork in New Town houses consisted of an enriched cornice with a frieze, the amount and detail of decoration varied from floor to floor, reflecting the importance of each room and how much the first owner was able to spend.
