Scope and Content Spirit safe, Feints receiver, and Intermediate spirit receiver at Edradour Distillery, Perthshire Edradour Distillery was founded in 1837 and was the last of the small farm distilleries. It was still operating on a small scale in the late 19th century, and employed all the traditional methods and equipment until the 1960s. Distillate from the still is passed through the spirit safe (a locked brass and glass box) and is then directed to the most suitable receiver. For example, the feints receiver is for the distillate run-off at the end of distillation. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks.
