Scope and Content Kilconquhar, Fife Kilconquhar, a picturesque village on the shores of Kilconquhar Loch, lies a short distance inland from Elie and the east coast of Fife. The village, pronounced 'Kinuchar', was photographed c.1890 by the Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge. The village, built along a main street which circles round the churchyard, is dominated by the distinctive pinnacled tower of its parish church. The church, built in 1819-21, is set on a knoll by the side of the loch, said to have formed in 1624 after a storm blocked a natural drainage channel. It is thought that the name of the village comes from 'Kil', meaning cell, and 'Conquhar', the Latinised name of Connacher the Hermit. There was a church here in the 12th century which was in the care of the convent of North Berwick, and was consecrated in 1243. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
