Scope and Content View of dovecot at Ravenscraig Castle, Kirkcaldy, Fife Originally built for James II's widow, Mary of Gueldres, work began on Ravenscraig Castle in 1460, and continued on and off until it was granted to William Sinclair, Earl of Caithness in 1470. There have been various alterations and additions since. This 16th-century beehive dovecot is situated to the east of the castle, right on the shore. Rubble-built, it has three ratcourses, which were built into dovecots to prevent rats attacking the nests. In common with many dovecots, it is now roofless. Pigeons once provided a valuable supply of fresh meat, especially in winter, and special structures were built by privileged landlords to accommodate the birds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
