Scope and Content Montrose Town-house (west front), Angus Montrose Town-house was built after a local committee offered to pay for a new assembly room. It replaced a medieval tolbooth which continued to be used as a prison until it was demolished in 1837. The west pediment bears the burgh arms. A second storey and a rear extension were added in 1819. The north and west fronts were refaced with ashlar in 1908. The 1819 additions were partly funded by the guildry in return for the use of the new second floor. This right was lost after a dispute with the town council in 1838.
