Scope and Content Doorway in steeple of Maybole Tolbooth, South Ayrshire Maybole Tolbooth was originally one of two tower houses in the burgh. Around 1673 it was bought for use as a tolbooth by the Earl of Cassillis, owner of the other tower house, on behalf of the heritors of Carrick and the burgh council. The original entrance to the steeple has a roll-moulded surround of late 16th-century type. The steeple was originally a stair-tower serving the tower house which belonged to William Kennedy of Blairquhan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
