Scope and Content Gravestone of Janet Liwd, Bowden churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Janet Liwd, daughter of a local tenant farmer, who died in 1712 aged 10. Skilfully carved, this winged cherub atop the gravestone symbolises the soul's ascent toward heaven. Beneath, flanked by drapery, a Memento Mori ('Remember you must die') scroll and a skull carved in profile are metaphors for human mortality and death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
