An Act of Parliament was passed to allow a new one to be built but work did not begin until 1813. Funding came from public subscription and the sale of bonds. The cupola over the main staircase is the only important feature surviving on the second floor which now houses small offices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
