Scope and Content '1711' gravestone, Bedrule churchyard, Scottish Borders Except for the date 1711, the inscription on this gravestone is badly weathered and illegible. Filling the pediment, the winged cherub symbolises the soul ascending to heaven. Beneath, the emblems between the pilasters signify death (the skull on crossbones, a popular 17th-century motif) and human mortality (the hourglass). The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
