Scope and Content No 62 Restalrig Road South after restoration, Restalrig, Edinburgh The village of Restalrig, to the east of Edinburgh, developed around its ancient parish church. Originally surrounded by farmland, the old village is now part of a post-1925 housing development which stretches north from the main East Coast railway line. This row of late 17th-century cottages, remodelled c.1938 with crowsteps over semi-dormer windows, stands across the road from the church. The end house, No 62, has a projecting 17th-century stair-tower, and is probably the oldest house in the village. The high wall opposite shows the original entrance to the churchyard. For centuries a set of 'jougs' (an iron collar on short chain used to fasten sinners by the neck to the church gates as a form of punishment) were set in the wall at this spot.
