Scope and Content Detail of moulding on steps of scale-and-platt staircase inside Abbot's House, 21 Maygate, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey including the frater hall, gatehouse, royal guest house or palace and the abbot's house. Built c.1450 as a residence for Abbot Richard de Bothwell this house was reconstructed in the 16th century as the home of Robert Pitcairn, the abbey's commendator (a non-monastic royal appointee granted a religious house for services to the Crown). This photograph shows the 17th-century moulded nosings on the risers of a scale-and-platt stair within the building. The treads have been covered with linoleum. In 1992-5 the whole building was restored as a heritage centre with a café and shop. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
