Scope and Content Massacre of Glencoe Memorial, Glencoe village The memorial was erected in 1883 by Mrs Ellen Burns MacDonald of Glencoe in honour of her ancestors. The sculptor was also a MacDonald, from Aberdeen. The monument takes the form of a tall, slender Celtic cross emerging from a rustic base, carved to resemble a tree trunk. A plaque in the cairn below records the purpose of the monument, which is situated at the south-eastern part of Glencoe village. Much of Glen Coe is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Apart from the historical associations, Glen Coe is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is much visited by hillwalkers and other visitors. The Massacre of Glencoe, the victims of which this monument commemorates, occurred on the 13th February 1692. Around 40 MacDonalds of Glencoe were slaughtered by members of the Campbell clan during the night, as a punishment for the lateness of the clan chief, Alasdair MacIain, in swearing an oath to King William.
