Scope and Content Leith Town Hall, City of Edinburgh Leith Town Hall was built after the Leith Police Act of 1827 gave administrative powers to 'Magistrates and Masters', a semi-representative local body. The building housed a town council from 1849 until 1920 when the burgh was amalgamated with Edinburgh. The exterior has changed little since the prison block (to the extreme left of the picture) was built in 1878. The older terrace to the right was converted into a police station and burgh offices in 1868. The inscription on the front pediment reads: TOWN HALL/ R & R DICKSON ARCHITECTS, and that on the west pediment: ERECTED BY THE MAGISTRATES AND MASTERS/ MDCCCXXVIII, Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
