Date 16/1/1846

Collection Collection of papers relating to Rosslyn Chapel, Midlothian, Scotland

Catalogue Number AL 39/29

Scope and Content Roberts expresses his pleasure at attending Britton’s RIBA lecture on the 12th January 1846 and thanks Britton for acknowledging his theory that the east wall of Rosslyn Chapel had been altered from its original design. The letter disparages William Burn’s dissenting view as unqualified and, in response, Robert’s presents evidence for his own theory. Roberts refers to two drawings copied from Gandy which are also included in the album (see AL 39/5 and AL 39/6). The letter further states his support of Fowler’s theory that the crypt located to the east of the chapel was used as the burial place for the St Clair family, but later plundered during the reformation. This letter may have been sent to William Burn (see also AL 39/8).
