Scope and Content St Catherine Street, Cupar, Fife St Catherine Street was developed by John Ferguson, banker and allegedly corrupt Provost, who probably hired Gillespie Graham to design the buildings. After Ferguson was bankrupted in 1817, and street was developed by architect-builder, Robert Hutchison. The domed building on the left is the new Town Hall, built by John Ferguson in 1815-17 to replace the tolbooth he had, probably illegally, had demolished. Cupar's old tolbooth blocked access to land being developed by John Ferguson the Provost. He called a council-meeting, allegedly only inviting his friends who agreed to have the building demolished. His workmen carried out the demolition the same night. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
