Scope and Content Balconets, No 8 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh Bellevue Crescent, designed by Thomas Bonnar in 1818, forms an elegant and near-symmetrical curve with St Mary's Church at its centre. The southern half was completed in 1832, and the northern section, due to the steep slope, was completed later in 1884. These elegant curved balconets, each the width of a window on the drawing-room floor of the house, show the Classical anthemion (centre) and palmette motifs. The anthemion, shaped like a honeysuckle flower, and palmette, shaped like a symmetrical palm shoot, were Classical ornaments commonly used in the late Georgian period. The anthemion became the standard decoration on balconets in the Regency period. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
