Scope and Content Queen Mary's House, 28-34 Bridge Street, Inverness, Highland Inverness in the 16th and 17th centuries was a small town, but strategically important to the government for controlling the Highlands. Its harbour was begun 1648, and the Citadel, a modern fort, was constructed by Cromwell's administration in 1652-7. This shows Queen Mary's House, said to have been Mary Queen of Scots lodgings in 1552 when she was refused entry to the castle. By the time it was demolished in 1968, little remained of the original building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
